Homemade Snickers Bars

Ok, I must confess that making my own snickers bars from scratch is quite an expensive venture I wont be embarking on in a looooong time! LOL

What I thought would be much cheaper than the store-bought ones, alas! put a hole in my pocket.

Life lessons: Not everything homemade is cost-effective and DIY snickers bar is one of ém!

Nevertheless, it was an absolutely delicious, healthier option with a much lower caloric value than store bought ones. While the store-bought one is 250 cal, the homemade version is about 220 cal… a 12% reduction in caloric value is worth every penny!

Had an adventure with it as my kid and I thoroughly enjoyed digging into it. As a matter of fact, we didnt allow the chocolate coating on it to set properly before diving into it!

Was it an easy process? Yes it was… and delicious too. It’s a bit of a test of patience considering you’ll have to put it in the refrigerator to allow it set at every stage of preparation.

So essentially, a snickers bar is made up of three layers with four distinct processes and each layer represents a stage with a combination of different ingredients.

Process 1: Creating the Nougat

Process 2: Creating the Caramel

Process 3: Spreading on the toasted nuts

Process 4: Coating with dark chocolate

Creating the Nougat:

A nougat is a confection made with a combination of sweetner (e.g sugar or dates) mixed with toasted nuts like almonds or pistachio. (you can adapt and use african peanuts which is similar to pistachio). crush them together, mix and mash…

In my own nougat, I used dates instead of refined sugar for a lower glycemic index sweetener and crushed almonds for the distinctive snickers bar taste plus a pinch of salt to bring out the depth of taste.

After creating the nougat, I spread into a small bread pan the length of a snickers bar and move on to the the next process.

The next process is to create the caramel

Creating the Caramel:

The caramel is made up of some more dates, peanut butter, milk and a pinch of salt still.

Mix and blend together to get a thick paste and spread over the nougat.

Spreading the caramel… you can make it a little thinner in consistency than mine

After spreading set aside and move onto the next stage which is to chop and spread over it some chopped almonds or a mixture of chopped almonds and pistachios.

Process 3: Spreading the toasted nuts on the caramel on the nougat (hope that makes sense!)

Let set in the refrigerator for 30mins… ( I couldnt wait that long so I put mine in the freezer for just 10mins! Lol)

after which I cut the whole thing into long bars and dipped into  melted dark chocolate. The white chocolate (milk chocolate) didnt make it as we eat it all up!
